Clinical Applications Research: Arsenicum Album is a homeopathic remedy used for treatment of flu and upset stomach. It has a strong effect on mucous membranes of the respiratory and digestive systems. It helps severe colds or hay fever accompanied by sneezing, coughing and watery, burning secretions, and headaches with weakness. Arsenicum Alb-treated mice showed revival and restoration in organs damaged from arsenic, including the liver, and “Efficacy of the homeopathic drug Arsenicum Alb-30 in reducing arsenic-induced damage to protein and nucleic acids is substantiated and the mechanism of action of the homeopathic drug through expression of regulatory genes inferred” (Kundu SN, et al. Efficacy of a potentized homeopathic drug (Arsenicum- Aalbum-30) in reducing cytotoxic effects produced by arsenic trioxide in mice: IV. Pathological changes, protein profiles, and content of DNA and RNA. Complement Ther Med. 2000 Sep;8(3):157-65). In fact, another study showed that the effect was so powerful that, “Arsenicum album can be considered as an antidote to arsenic poisoning” (Mitra K, et al. Efficacy of a potentized homoeopathic drug (Arsenicum Album-30) in reducing toxic effects produced by arsenic trioxide in mice: II. On alterations in body weight, tissue weight and total protein. Complement Ther Med. 1999 Mar;7(1):24-34).

Baptisia is commonly used for flu and cold symptoms. One scientific review of common cold and influenza viruses, highlights select botanicals, including Baptisia, “that may help in the prevention and treatment of these conditions” (Roxas M, Jurenka J. Colds and influenza: a review of diagnosis and conventional, botanical, and nutritional considerations. Altern Med Rev. 2007 Mar;12(1):25-48).

Bryonia and Phytolacca are helpful for many symptoms associated with colds and the flu. Breastfeeding mothers who think they have the flu may have mastitis; when a homeopathic formula containing byronia and phyolacca were administered for mastitis (in cows), it was not only more effective than antibiotics, it was less expensive as a treatment (Varshney JP, Naresh R Comparative efficacy of homeopathic and allopathic systems of medicine in the management of clinical mastitis of Indian dairy cows. Homeopathy. 2005 Apr;94(2):81-5). Bryonia “showed significant analgesic and antipyretic activity” in a scientific study (Sivakumar T, et al. Evaluation of analgesic, antipyretic activity and toxicity study of Bryonia laciniosa in mice and rats. Am J Chin Med. 2004;32(4):531-9). Bryonia was also found to exhibit significant anti-inflammatory activity, significant inhibition on edema caused by histamine, decreased formation of granuloma tissue, and inhibition of leukocyte migration (Gupta M, et al. Evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity of chloroform extract of Bryonia... Biol Pharm Bull. 2003 Sep;26(9):1342-4).

Bryonia is widely used as an adaptogenic and restorative substance “with immunomodulatory and stressprotective properties that increase the non-specific resistance of an organism toward harmful stimuli” (Nersesyan AK, Collins AR. Possible genotoxic activity of extracts of Bryonia alba roots on human lymphocytes and transformed cells. Neoplasma. 2002;49(2):114-6). Bryonia has shown inhibitory activity against EBV (Epstein Barr virus) (Ukiya M, et al. Anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor-promoting effects of cucurbitane glycosides from the roots of Bryonia dioica. J Nat Prod. 2002 Feb;65(2):179-83.)

Causticum is typically used to relieve ailments of a burning, raw, or sore character, hoarse cough, ringing in the ears, and pain in the extremities. Causticum has been evaluated using acute and chronic inflammatory models, and was found to show significant inhibition of the inflammation (Prado Neto Jde A, et al. Action of Causticum in inflammatory models. Homeopathy. 2004 Jan;93(1):12-6.) Causticum is also excellent for bladder symptoms and urinary retention (Dr Tom Whitmarsh, Homoeopathy and multiple sclerosis. Open Door; Autumn 2001:4-5 - Glasgow Homoeopathic Hospital).

Cinchona, Rhus Tox, and Sulfur are all recommended as excellent cold and flu remedies by Dan Ullman, MPH (Dana Ullman MPH, Essential Homeopathy. New World Library, 2002). Cinchona has exerted specific antioxidative, antiproliferative and biochemical effects on liver cells “which all point to a potential hepatoprotective and tumoristatic action” (Gebhardt R. Antioxidative, antiproliferative and biochemical effects in HepG2 cells of a homeopathic remedy and its constituent plant tinctures tested separately or in combination. Arzneimittelforschung. 2003;53(12):823-30). Rhus tox “in homeopathic dilution appears to interfere with inflammatory processes involving histamine, prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators” (Dos Santos AL, et al. In vivo study of the anti-inflammatory effect of Rhus toxicodendron. Homeopathy. 2007 Apr;96(2):95-101). Rhus tox has cox-2 inhibiting abilities and is also effective against cox 1 and the powerful leukotrienes (Jaggi R, et al. Dual inhibition of 5-LOX/COX by a reconst. homeopathic remedy; possible explanation for clinical efficacy and favorable gastrointestinal tolerability. Inflamm Res. 2004 Apr;53(4):150-7).

Dulcamara is anti-inflammatory, and has exhibited inhibitory activity against prostaglandins in scientific studies (Tunon H, et al. Evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity of some Swedish medicinal plants. Inhibition of prostaglandin biosynthesis and PAF-induced exocytosis. J Ethnopharmacol. 1995 Oct;48(2):61-76). In fact, it has been named as a specific cox-2 inhibitor (Jaggi R, et al. ibid). Dulcamara traditionally helps ailments worsened by cold weather, such as congestive headaches, rattling cough, icy cold feet, and stiff neck and shoulders.

Eupatorium Perfoliatum is a well-known homeopathic remedy for flu-like symptoms (Jaric S, et al. An ethnobotanical study on the usage of wild medicinal herbs from Kopaonik Mountain (Central Serbia). J Ethnopharmacol. 2007 Apr 20;111(1):160-175.) It is especially good for relief of headache, violent chills, and bone-pains.

Echinacea Purpurea homeopathic has been found to “modulate peritoneal inflammatory reaction and have a cytoprotective action on leukocytes” (Pedalino CM, Effect of Atropa belladonna and Echinacea angustifolia in homeopathic dilution on experimental peritonitis. Homeopathy. 2004 Oct;93(4):193-8.) It is particularly helpful in controlling fever and lymphatic inflammation.

Eucalyptus is a powerful antiseptic, useful in conditions of the mucous surfaces of the air passages and GI tract. Gelsemium Sempervirens is particularly helpful for relief of sneezing, runny nose, dull headache, diarrhea and fever. Influenzium “06” Lachesis is a nosode, developed from the most current flu virus strain, and is particularly helpful for alleviating inflammation of the mucous membranes, particularly respiratory, as well as general relief of flu-like symptoms. Sarcolacticum Ac eliminates the tired, “sore-all-over” feeling, restless sleep, and nausea/vomiting symptoms of the flu. Wyethia is extremely helpful in relieving sore throats, hoarseness, and clearing up dry, hacking coughs.

Anas Barbaraie: Anas Barb specifically addresses fevers, chills, and body aches and pains. Avaire acts most prominently on the lungs, especially in flu and bronchitis.
