DHA is the long chain fatty acid that is essential for brain development and has been found in numerous clinical trials and observational studies to support cognitive function (Yurko-Mauro K. et al. One review searched the literature (including PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) and found mechanisms of action to explain why the constituents of plants have support potential for neurotransmitters, including curcumin (Rev Neurosci. 2015 Feb 14. Curcumin from Curcuma longa interact with D1 and D2 receptors as well as elevate the brain dopamine level. Mechanism of support seems to be through Vitamin D receptors.

Ginkgo, along with phosphatidyl choline (as sunflower lecithin) and phosphatidyl serine are the most frequently recommended nutritional substances for cognitive support, “often in combinations with many other substances” (J Neuropsychiatry ClinNeurosci. 2010 Summer;22(3):345-7. Phosphatidyl Serine or phosphatidyl choline combined with ginkgo biloba appears to potentiate the effects of a low dose of ginkgo biloba (Hum Psychopharmacol. 2007 Jun;22(4):199-210. Acute cognitive effects of standardized Ginkgo biloba extract complexed with phosphatidylserine.Kennedy DO et al). The data suggest that combining standardized Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) with soy-derived phospholipids enhances the bioavailability of GBE's active components. The current study therefore aimed to assess the comparative effects of a low dose of GBE with either phosphatidyl serine or phosphatidyl choline. The study utilized a placebo-controlled, multi-dose, double-blind, balanced-crossover design. Twenty-eight healthy young participants received either GBE, GBE with phosphatidylserine, or GBE with phosphatidylcholine or placebo. Ginkgo together with phosphatidylserine had the biggest effect, followed by ginkgo with phosphatidyl choline.

We have always recognized the essential role for choline. Choline (as bitartrate) is a necessary element and building block for the structural components of cell membranes and helps account for fluidity and communication within those membranes. Choline is essential for phosphatidyl choline and sphingomyelin, which are the two major phospholipids in cell walls. Choline is the precursor molecule for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is involved in many functions of the brain and muscles.

Choline has many forms, several of which have been called “designer cholines” because they exhibit properties above and beyond regular choline. Two of these designer cholines are known as alpha-GPC, or Glycerolphosphorylcholine, and CDP choline, or Cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine.

Alpha glycerolphosphorylcholine (Alpha GPC demonstrated a support benefit for patients in a number of clinical studies conducted on the brain and maintenance of brain function. A research paper reviews the roles of choline and of choline-containing phospholipidson brain metabolism, stating that (CCPLs) are safe, effective compounds developed a long time ago thathave a place in this support category and should be further investigated by new appropriate clinical studies.
